Byo City FC throws coach Philani ‘Beefy’ Ncube under the bus for his drug abuse remarks

Philani 'Beefy' Ncube

Bulawayo City Football club has distanced itself from the remarks made by their free talking coach Philani ‘Beefy’ Ncube that 80percent of local footballers are drug abusers.

During his club’s weekly press conference, Ncube said 80 percent of local players use drugs, specifically Broncleer.

Ncube said during his club’s win against Highlanders FC last week one player from the former champions was clearly on drugs.

“I can tell you that almost 80 percent of Zimbabwean players are on drugs. I will not mention names but when we played Highlanders there was a player from their end who was clearly under the influence. He was just sleeping. I know for a fact that he takes drugs.

The biggest problem is that the fans are selling these substances to the boys. Yet they are the same you will hear saying coaches must be fired when results don’t come,” he said.

In a statement by the club’s Secretary General and Acting Chief Executive Officer Prince Butshe Dube, the club said Beefy’s remarks were a damage to Highlanders’ reputation.

“Bulawayo City FC management would like to disassociate itself from a statement attributed to our coach Philani Ncube.

We note the press conference was arranged as a build up to our match against Caps United.

We found it unfortunate that he delved into issues beyond his purview.

We sincerely apologise to our good neighbours Highlanders FC on the reputational damage caused by his statement.

Bulawayo City FC subscribes to Wada and will never deliberately knowing conceal any information about substance abuse by any of its players as doing so is complicity to crime. Bulawayo City FC subscribes to Far Play,” read the statement.

Beefy is not new to controversy, last year he admitted that he had to assault one of his players in the dressing room during half time.
