Skyz Metro FM boss blasts Econet

Qhubani Moyo

Skyz Metro FM Chief Executive Officer Dr Qhubani Moyo (pictured) had no kind words for giant telecommunications operator Econet Wireless after the two entities hosted two shows that ran concurrently at the same venue on Friday night.

Bulawayo’s first commercial radio station hosted its annual music awards at the Large City Hall on Friday night whilst Econet Wireless hosted a Thank You 2019 concert for its customers at the Large City Hall car park.

On the day it was reported that the two event organisers had agreed on the hours to hold the events. It was agreed that the Thank You concert will run from 5PM to 7PM and break for the awards ceremony. After the awards ceremony, the Thank You concert will continue and serve as an after-party for the awards, but that was not the case as the two shows ran concurrently.

The free entry Econet Wireless gig attracted more numbers more than Skyz metro FM awards leading to the radio station boss to accuse Econet of sabotaging their show which was publicized way before the Thank You concert.

Before the announcement of the last winner of the night-song of the year award Moyo described Econet Wireless stance as ‘disrespectful’.

“We had planned this before and way back but then came some people from nowhere, with deeper pockets and money, bigger stage, louder public address system (PA system) and that affected us.

They are disrespectful of to us, to you and to local talent, but you are our listeners and we live together, you have been with us since the start of this radio station and our destination is a television station. Let’s walk this walk together,” said Qhubani Moyo.

The free entry Thank You concert was headlined by Baba Harare, Novuyo Seagirl, Clement Magwaza, Cal_Vin, DJ Prince, Super Geeks and Skaiva.
